North East Churches Acting Together

Supporting the Churches of the North East in their relationships with one another and their mission to the wider world

North East Churches Acting Together is the regional Intermediate Ecumenical body of Churches Together in England for the North East. Established and funded by the mainstream denominations it seeks to serve the whole Christian people of God across the North East England. We cover an area from Berwick and the Borders in the North down to the Cleveland Hills in the South and out to Alston in the West.

Churches are working together, worshiping and praying together, sharing resources and information and supporting our local communities.

NECAT aims to increase unity and cooperation between churches in the following ways:

Growing in Christian Fellowship

Engaging in God’s mission

Interacting in public life

OUR History

NECAT was formed in 2014 by the bringing together of North East Christian Churches Together and the Churches Regional Commission.  Our vision was to bring together people with both an understanding of the social issues of the North East and what the churches in the region were already doing and to give a voice to the churches, acting together, when talking with other agencies.  The Churches Regional Commission had a long history of looking at some of the issues that affected the North East and holding events and consultations that helped us to share what was happening and where the churches may be able to support their communities.  NECCT had been working across the region, supporting the local Churches Together groups and encouraging local ecumenism.  In bringing the CRC and NECCT together in North East Churches Acting Together we recognised the importance of the work the churches in the North East in supporting their communities and that much more is achievable in working together.

NECAT is led by a board of Trustees, appointed by our sponsoring churches and the Northern Church Leaders group and also includes a representative of the regional Ecumenical officers and the Regional Churches Together groups.
